Perhaps the whole world bought the exact same clothes in the same sale. Or, maybe those are the only clothes that are available to most people and that's why everyone dresses the same.

There is also another disturbing implication. It is possible that Steve is only the latest in a long list of cloned Steves. You can take control of a new Steve by dying in the game. The old Steve will turn into a Zombie and hunt you down, continuing the cycle. Although it is a theory, it is impossible to disprove.
